I had completely forgotten how modular sewing can be. Being able to simply see something in the sunglass case that I didn’t like – how the fabric fell, the shape of the bag, the size – and then being able to alter it at will was really gratifying. I chose the two fabrics there was the most of to make sure I wouldn’t be limited by quantity of fabric, but I ended up really liking the maroon lining on a black case. It made the case feel very chic.
I started by cutting out 7″ by 7″ squares of the fabric and foam using some fabric scissors. I the cut off the curved edge that would later become the clasp.

Following along with the video, I sewed the sides of the case individually using a combination of back stitch, an edge stitch and the running stitch. There was no serious logic in which side I used which stitch on as all the sides were functionally identical and it was more about trying out a few different stitches and having fun with it. After I stitched the sides I flipped the black outer lining right side out and placed it in the maroon fabric. I then sewed the tops together, flipped the maroon side over, so they were both right side out and added the foam in.

After adding in the foam I sewed the part where I added the foam closed. I used a running stitch for this part because I wanted it to be as clean as possible since these stitches are visible.

Lastly, I sewed the snaps on. If I could redo this project, I would have sewed the buttons on at the very beginning so the thread would not be as visible at the end.

Lastly, a pictured of my cleaned workspace:

How much it cost:
Labor: $8/hour * 4 hours = $32
Fabric: $ 0.56
- $10/ yard (36 inches) on a 44 inch wide roll.
- 36″x44″=1584″. (49*2)”=89″ = total square inches of fabric used.
- 89/1584 = 0.056 or 5.6%.
- 5.6% of $10 = $0.56
Thread: $0.03
- $0.33 cents per spool * 10% of a spool that I used = $0.033.
Foam: $0.81
Snaps: $0.40
Needle: $1.00
Pins: $0.10
Fabric Scissors: $10
