3D Printing: Impossible Object

For this assignment, I first chose the object I wanted to create.

I went to MakerWorld and searched, “Impossible object”. Makerworld is a Bambu site where creators can upload their designs to print. I found a gyrosphere that I liked and downloaded the file.

I then measured the gumball cups to make sure I was scaling the gyros correctly. I then opened the file in Bambu Studio and used the scale feature in the slicer to make the gyros bigger and fit the gumball cups with minimal space

After setting it up, I sliced the file with the correct printer, material and plate settings, which were Bambu Carbon x1, PLA white, and a textured PEI plate.

I then sent the file to the printer and returned in about an hour to the OEDK when it finished.

The print came out smoothly and successfully!

I then switched to SLA Printing process. I downloaded the Preform program and used the same STL file I saved from the Bambu print, so I didn’t have to rescale my object. I set the settings for the printer up and created supports for each ring. I made sure there was enough resin in the printer and there was a clean plate ready. I then sent it to the printer and it began, taking about 2 hours.

When I returned, someone had already removed my print and set it in the wash machine so that they could do their print. I started the wash cycle again because I was unsure if the person actually ran the cycle. I ran it for 10 minutes because that is what the recommended time was.

After washing, I took my pieces and air compressed them to try to get all the resin in between the rings off. I thought I had gotten everything because as I was air compressing I could physically see liquid getting blown out of the gaps. I was incorrect though, because later I figured out there had still been some resin left.

I then placed the pieces in the curing machine and let it cure for 30 minutes at 60 degrees Celsius. After curing, I removed the supports and attempted to shift the rings but there must have been extra resin between them because they couldn’t move successfully. I tried scraping out the resin and it worked for a few layers, but ultimately could not loosen up the rings. The objects were also extremely sticky still so I cured them for 30 more minutes.

I wanted to try to reprint the gyro with SLA printing, but since there are only two printers they were constantly running prints and I did not get a chance to reprint. If I were to reprint it though, I would try to position the gyro so that instead of a flat set of rings, I would twist the rings so that each layer would be perpendicular to each other.

I added the pieces to the gumball cups, but decided to only make one of the gumball pieces with the resin print since it was unsuccessful and the other four with the successful PLA prints.

I didn’t really use a workspace besides the printers and I made sure to clean the Bambu plate well for the next print. For the SLA printers, someone else took my print off and cleaned the plate for their own print.
