My Finger

Making the Mold and Casting

The mold was made during the class period. I made mine with my partner for the final project. We both put one finger into the mold so that we would not have to remake it. We then each casted one of our fingers.

I then returned a few days later to cast my second finger. I accidentally grabbed the alginate instead of rockite so my finger was obviously wrong. I then grabbed the rockite to do it correctly. When I removed my second finger, I destroyed the mold a little bit and the finger-tip was messed up. But as my skin is sensitive to the materials, I did not remake the mold or cast again.
Post Processing
I first lightly sanded the edges to clean the bottom of the finger. I then mounted the fingers on the plastic piece used for casting to spray paint the fingers.
I painted the fingers blue, let it set, then coated it with a clear coating.
Cost Breakdown
Only a little of each material was used, so based on the total price, an approximate cost was determined (likely an over estimate).
  • Rockite ~$2
  • Alginate ~$1
  • Spray paint + clear coat ~ $1
  • Labor $15/hr

The labor is required was non-technical. About 2 was put into making the two fingers. The total cost is $34 for two fingers.
