So. Could I have gone with a slightly more normal blog post title? Perhaps. But why deny the world my freakish nature?
This was a fairly simple project, which I appreciated. I started off by mixing water and alginate in a 4.5:1 ratio. Then I created the mold by sticking my fingers into the cold oatmeal-like consistency, which was sort of fun in a slimy, wet way. It was really hard to keep my fingers still, but I wanted my mold to be as realistic as possible, so I did my best.
Once I regained my wiggle privileges, I carefully removed my fingers and mixed the rockite blend together before filling the mold. I returned the next day to release my 11th and 12th digits and dispose of the alginate, which had taken on a delightful, chewy-looking jello texture.
Hindsight being 20/20, I should’ve sanded off the extra blobby bits at this stage, but I was terrified my new fingers would crumble apart and I would have to redo everything. The screws were also pretty lopsided, so I’ll try to center them more securely in the future. In any case, I spray-painted my project a nice metallic rose gold and called it a day. Because why have freaky finger hooks when you could have freaky, flashy finger hooks?
