Homework 8: Molding and Casting

cleaned work space

For this homework, I did the beginner assignment of casting and molding my fingers as hooks. To do this, I used alginate (1.75 oz), rockite (35 g), water, acrylic paint, 3 plastic cups, one popsicle stick, and clear glossy spray sealant. This project took 10 minutes for the alginate mold, 15 minutes to make the rockite cast (plus 24 hours to dry), and approximately 45 minutes to paint, totalling 1 hour of labor.
The alginate would cost approximately $8 for a 13-oz bag, which is $1.08 for 1.75 oz. The rockite would cost roughly $20 for a 10-lb bag, which is $.15 for 35 g. Acrylic paint is approximately $10 for 32 oz, which I would estimate I used less than 1 oz of, costing roughly $.03 or less. As I am rounding up on the cost of paint, I will not calculate the cost of the cups or popsicle sticks, as these would cost less than $.01 due to the OeDK buying in bulk, and these materials being extremely cheap. The clear gloss spray would be approximately $8 for a 12-oz can, which I would estimate I used 1 oz of, equalling roughly $.66. Therefore, the cost of materials would be approximately $1.92 overall. The cost of 1 hour of labor would be $7.25 according to the Texas minimum wage, or $21.82 according to the MIT Living Wage Calculator.
In total, this project would cost $9.17 in total according to the Texas minimum wage, or $23.74 if going by the Texas living wage.
