Hello Everyone! I am Aiden Hwang

Hey everyone! This was one of the classes that I was most excited for and hope I am able to get to know everyone well over the semester. I am a freshman at Brown College studying Mechanical Engineering while minoring in Engineering Design. In my free time I like taking photos of my friends or of interesting places. My instagram highlights are plastered with my photography so you guys can go critique my skills. Additionally I like playing sports at the Rec. Last semester I took part in volleyball, soccer, and table tennis. I’ve been pretty hardcore about soccer all my life but gave the other ones a go for the first time last semester. If I’m not at the OEDK or studying, safe to say I found my way to the Rec in some fashion or the other. I’m also a big time watcher of sports so if there are any fans of F1 or FC Barcelona feel free to come up and talk (not the Madrid fans though). I’m always available to talk about F1 drama and actually was fortunate to go watch a race in Silverstone a couple years back! At Rice for this semester, I’m interested in joining engineering clubs such as ECLIPSE or Rice Electric Vehicle this semester.

This past semester I was a part of EDES 120 and my team made a composites oven for Rice ECLIPSE. The course was a struggle at times but we were able to deliver a fully functioning oven that could reach 300 degrees which was way above our original given target goal of 185. I had a great time helping out with the fabrication of the oven and learned a little bit of Solidworks for this class but am interested in learning a lot more. I hope that I can develop my skills and ability throughout this semester.

One thing I have always wanted to make is a go kart or some vehicle of some sort. This is why I joined REV but I would also love to have a go kart as a personal project. I have created plans and ideas in my head over the summer before but haven’t had the machinery or knowhow to build something as polished as I wanted. Another project idea I had was to create my own car or plane simulators by putting cameras in the drivers seats of RC cars, planes, or drones. Then this feed can be broadcast back to a human driver as they pilot the vehicle remotely. If anyone wants to team up for any project let me know!

One thing I want to learn in EDES 210 is working with metal. I have some experience working with wood so if I was able to have the versatility to work with both when needed I believe that I would be able to make even better projects. What I am most interested in learning about specifically is CNC machining. Firstly, I believe that learning these skills will boost my helpfulness in clubs here at Rice. Secondly, I just think CNC machining is really cool and want to learn how to use it.
