Meet your host: Alexis Alfasi

Alexis Alfasi this past summer in Sorrento Italy

Hi guys!

My name is Alexis Alfasi, and I am a current sophomore at Hanszen studying bioengineering and minoring in engineering design! At Rice, I am an officer of the Club Water Polo Team and an active member of the Society of Women’s Engineers, the Biomedical Engineering Society, and Rice Medical Design. Outside of school and club related stuff, I love to read, especially fantasy books, go to the beach (although New York beaches are much better than Galveston), and play with my dog, Rocky!

This past summer, I did the iSEED program in Paris and Amsterdam. In Paris, my team had the opportunity to work with a client to develop a device that could twist open small containers, like lipstick or chapstick, for a client with limited finger grip. This was the first time I had used CAD and 3D printed something functional entirely by myself, which I was really proud of and which really sparked my interest in CAD and 3D printing.

In addition, I have always loved working with wood, and in high school, I made a matching set of countertop chairs for my house out of just planks of wood!

In the future, I would love to make my own surfboard. It would be awesome to customize the board and decorate it to make it truly my own, and I would actually use the board when I go out surfing in the summer. I always get a lot of pride in using something that I actually made myself, and I think a surfboard is a good combination of being cool to make and something I’ll actually use.

One thing I really hope to learn in EDES 210 is how to work with metal. I attempted welding in high school, and, well, I set a new record for managing to weld a lid onto a toolbox backwards three separate times. Not my finest moment, but I’m hoping to do better in EDES 210 and actually be able to make something functional out of metal!

That’s all for now, but I’m looking forward to keeping the blog updated with my progress throughout the semester!
