Ring finger

These week’s assignment was to create a perfect ring finger using molding and casting. I began by making a mold of my entire hand using the alginate. The first hand I made turned out fairly well, but there were some imperfections from the alginate and the top of the finger was flat because it was too close to the bottom of the cup.

I redid the hand in alginate and came up with a much better hand. Unfortunately, the finger broke so I had to glue it back on. I also used plaster to cover up the crack, which was somewhat effective but removed some of the detail in that area. I used the dremel and a plastic spoon to cut out the part of the finger I needed and made another alginate mold of only the finger that I wanted.

I created this base so that I would be able to easily remove the finger from the alginate. I was hoping to recast the finger in silicon, but the alginate stuck to the plaster so I could not get a good negative and the finger broke again so it was not worth continuing with that finger.

I made one last hand with the alginate and this one turned out very well, so I removed as many small imperfections I saw (there were not many) and cut out the finger and mounted it on the base so that it can stand on its own.
