For this project, we created an apron that we can use for the rest of our time in ENGI210. Here’s what my process looked like:
I followed the Small size chart and created a pattern to use with my fabric.
I then cut it out , and to make this part easier for me, I folded the fabric in half and followed the outline. This allowed for a more symmetrical cut.
Next, I folded the seam back and pinned it.
In one continuous go, I sewed the seam down with my choice of white thread, puncturing the fabric with the needle and lifting the foot whenever I wanted to turn at corners. I also used the guide lines on the sewing machine to allow for a consistent seam distance. In this one go, I also was able to sew down the side tie straps and the neck strap.
Once I had a solid apron made, I began cutting out the pocket I wanted to add. Following the YouTube tutorial, I created a pattern, cut it out, and cut my pocket.
I followed the pocket tutorial and sewed it on…
Here’s my final product (-:
Q&A:
- How much did this object cost?
- I started off with a piece of fabric that the OEDK cut for me, so I’m not sure the dimensions, but let’s say a yard. According to this website, wholesale fabric is often sold for under $5/yard.
- Total: $5
- I worked for about 3 total hours on this. According to this website, the average salary for a seamstress in Houston is $13.62.
- $13.62 x 3 = $40.86
- Total: $45.86
- According to this website, elastic costs $1.79/yard.
- Total: $47.65
- According to this website, a spool of white thread similar to the one I used costs $1.99.
- Total: $49.64
- I couldn’t find any prices on sewing machine rentals in Houston, but a sewing machine similar ot the one I used at the OEDK costs $84.99 on Amazon.
- Total: $134.63
