I CNCed wood to create a Pokeball shape that used two different depths to emphasize the button in the center. The steps to accomplish this are as follows:
- A Pokeball noun was selected from the noun project.
- A stock wood was selected, its dimensions were measured and this noun was imported into Carbide Create as an svg file. This file was scaled and transformed. Tool paths were added. The outline toolpath was set to the stock bottom depth so the noun is cut out. The second toolpath was at a depth of 0.35 in and the third toolpath was at 0.15in depth around the central button.
- The file was then imported into Carbide Motion. The stock wood was secured onto the Nomad bed using duct tape. The bit was zeroed using the probe and the CNC was started. During the CNC job, the wood shavings began to turn black and were burning. This was prevented by using a vacuum frequently by pausing the Nomad and sweeping the vacuum uniformly inside.
- This process was repeated once more to create a second copy. When creating the second copy, the stock wood shifted because it was not secured well. This was corrected by using extra duct tape on the stock. Both products were sanded down and any loose wood strings were removed. Both products were then spray-painted royal blue.
Cost Estimation
- Wood ($0.03/in^2) = $3
- Spray paint ($0.017/mL)(10 mL) = $0.17
- Orbital Sander ($0.000133/W-hr)(600 W)(0.5 hr) = $0.04
- Woodworking Labor Cost ($24.81/hr)(4) = $99.24
- Nomad Power Cost = $2.53
Total Cost = $104.98
