Hey everyone! My name is Emily Murray and I’m currently in the MBE GMI program here at Rice. I recently graduated a few months ago from the University of Illinois with a bachelors in bioengineering.
One thing I’ve made that I’m proud of was a “Scream Machine” from Monsters Inc. At Illinois, there is a huge engineering fair each spring called “Engineering Open House”, which brings in tens of thousands of people and is geared towards inspiring the next generation of engineers. My team made our own rendition of a scream machine, a canister that lights up depending on the intensity of your scream, and it gained a lot of traction with the younger audience in particular. Although it was a simple project, I learned a lot about 3D printing, microcontrollers, and explaining advanced concepts to a variety of audiences.
I’d really like to learn how to sew and crochet so that I can make some of my own clothes and be able to repair rips & tears. Another thing I’m really excited to learn about this semester is laser cutting techniques and cast molding.
Looking forward to the rest of the semester!
