For this assignment I cut two owls with the Nomad CNC machine.
The first step was to select our object. The object that I selected was an owl from this website: https://thenounproject.com/icon/owl-1313788/
After selecting the object, I measured the thickness of the piece of wood and put double side tape to the piece of wood that we were going to use for cutting.
Then, I processed the file in Carbide Create, input the measures of the piece of wood and created the toolpath that I wanted. In this case I included some pockets in the owl for part of the eyes, the stomach, wing and head.
After this, I put the piece of wood in the cnc machine a opened Carbide Motion to calibrate the cnc machine and start cutting
The cnc machining time was of 20 min, and everything was going well until the piece of wood came off and made a hole to the owl…
I had to do it one more time, but this time I decided to put more tape so that it would not come off.
For the second owl, I had to use a piece of wood that was not so smooth, so I decided to cut the owl vertically.
Another issue that I experienced was that the input thickness for the second wood was not correct, so the machine did not cut completely. I decided to cut the owl with a knife.
Once I had the owls ready, I sand them with some sandpaper sheets and for the second owl I used a Dremel to sand the parts that had holes.
Finally, I spray painted the owls with some blue spray paint and when they were dried I used some tweezers to remove some little wood hairs.
Finally, I did the cost model for these owls.
