Molding and Casting!

Almost there! Our 2nd to last unit, and we learned how to mold and cast! So our project was to create a mold of 2 of our fingers and then cast them with rockite!

Step 1) In a flexible beaker, I mixed 1.5 ounces of Alginate and 6.75 ounces of water until it was smooth and became slightly thicker. As soon as it started to thicken, I made a “peace sign” and placed my 2 fingers into the mixture for about 5 minutes. It then solidified, so I took out my fingers and the Alginate created a mold of them! In a separate beaker, I mixed 70 grams of Rockite and 20 grams of water until smooth. Then poured it into the mold! Since the fingers are supposed to be some sort of wall hook, I attached 2 screws to this contraction that let me sink the heads of the screws into the rockite. With everything together, I taped it to make sure it stayed, then let it sit overnight to harden!

Step 2) I came back the next day, and the fingers had hardened! So I took them out, wiped them down, sanded the bottom a bit to get rid of some overflow. I noticed that there were a few bumps on the cast, and I think it is probably because I wasn’t able to fully mix the alginate and some clumps were left behind…

Step 3) Then I painted them. I gave them 2 coats of yellow spray paint and then a coat of the semi-clear gloss. And we are done!
