Hi everyone! My name is Karina Manrique, and I’m a junior at McMurtry College majoring in Mechanical Engineering with a minor in Engineering Design. I’m excited to take this class because I learned during my year away that this is one of the most important courses I can take at Rice to become a better engineer and open more worlds to explore. Some of my hobbies include collecting jewelry, traveling, and gaming. I have recently been going to flea markets and finding high-quality pieces, like silver rings, for low prices. Last year, I went on over 40 flights; my highlights included Taiwan, South Korea, and St. Croix. I also recently got a Nintendo Switch, and my favorite games include Mario Party and Lego Harry Potter: Years 1–4. As for this class,I hope to meet all of you and learn how to create with the new tools at my disposal.
I am returning from a year-long co-op with Delta Air Lines in Atlanta, Georgia. Before my time away, I served as the Secretary for the Society of Women Engineers (SWE), where I helped plan and announce many cool activities. You might remember when the Aston Martin Formula 1 team brought their car to campus! As I return, I hope to rejoin SWE and get involved with other clubs around Rice. Please let me know if you have any recommendations for clubs.

During my co-op at Delta, I worked in the Liaison Engineering department. It is a 24/7 group that handles damage exceeding the tolerances in repair manuals. On a daily basis, we wrote repair instructions for mechanics to bring aircraft back into service. If you have any questions about this experience, please feel free to ask!

One thing I’ve made that I’m proud of is a laser-cut heart I created for my mom for Mother’s Day. I learned that a certain pattern can be used to bend wood into contours. Although it has been a long time since I used a laser cutter, I hope to refresh the skills I first learned in high school.

One thing I would like to make this semester is an article of clothing. I feel that mass-produced clothing is often made sloppily, while high-quality items are very expensive. This semester, I want to learn sewing techniques to make my own pieces or learn how to tailor clothes properly.
There are many things I want to take away from ENGI 210. While I would love to become proficient with every tool we use, I would be especially happy to learn plasma cutting and refresh my memory of laser cutting to make arts and crafts. Once I have mastered what is taught in this class, I believe my imagination will be the only limit.
