CNCing Cool Batman signs

CNC is a cool machine as it can accurately engrave/cut in a 3-d way in various materials.

For this week’s homework, Casey and I  CNCed batman sign in multiple materials. In the batman movies/cartoons, James Gordan casts batman sign in the air to signify batman. So, Casey and I want to try if we can call batman with the batman sign we CNCed.

We start the project by finding a batman sign on google image and imported it in the Adobe illustrator.

We then delete the border and scale it in the Illustrator and turned the graph into a g-code with Makercam.

Then, we imported the G-code and started CNC.

We first started CNCing with the wax as it is in a square shape (which looks cool) and its size matches our design(3in x 3in). However, during the CNC process, we find that the scaling of CNC machine is a little bit off. As a result, only half of the bat sign is carved on the wax.

To solve the problem, Casey and I tried again on the foam. We chose a foam of a larger size to prevent the scaling problem and the result turned to be pretty good.

With the success of CNCing on foam. We tried challenging another material–Wood.

We actually launched two wood engraves because we met some problem during the first one. We failed to choose a good starting point of the cut. So during the CNC process, the machine reached its Y coordinate limit and the cut was automatically stopped. So, we can see that there is a missing edge in our first cut.

After cutting the batsign with wood. We post processed it with Dremel  to make the edge and surface smoother.

With that, we got our all three cool Bat signs!
