Who are you and what activities are you engaged in at Rice?

Hi! I’m Caitlin Ervine, and I’m a sophomore at Jones College. If I’m not studying or working, odds are you’ll find me playing the guitar, hanging out at the KTRU station, or beating my friends in ping pong at Jones.

What is one thing that you have made that you are proud of?

Last year, I coded a very simple version of Rock-Paper-Scissors-Lizard-Spock in my free time. I found a project description of how to do it online, and coded it that afternoon. It’s not at all complex and not that many lines of lines of code, but as someone who came into Rice with no prior coding experience, it felt really good to see that I could implement what I had learned from my COMP class to create something just because I thought it would be fun.

What is one thing that you want to make (either this semester or in the future)?

I would love to make a laser cut mechanical model. I have seen videos of UGEARS models (the train below is one of their models) and simple crank operated models, and I think they look really cool and would be fun to make.

What is one thing that you hope to learn in ENGI 210?

I really hope to learn how to 3D print and laser cut effectively, and just become generally be comfortable using most of the machines in the OEDK.
