Megan’s finger hooks

This assignment was to create molds of our fingers with alginate and fill them with plaster to create wall hooks.

The first step was to measure and mix the alginate, so I added 4 oz of alginate and 4 oz of water to a silicone container and mixed until there was an even consistency. I then stuck in my fingers, waited until the alginate hardened, and took them out.

Me following step one ^^

The second step was to mix the plaster, which I did by putting in about 2.5 scoops of powder and 1 scoop of water so I had a bit of a thicker consistency. I then poured in the plaster, tapped the mold on the table a couple times to remove any air bubbles, and secured the screws into the fingers with blue tape.

The third step was to wait 30 minutes, which I didn’t photograph. I also removed the alginate revealed the fingers.

Here I am following step 3.

The last step was sanding the fingers a bit to remove odd extra parts and spray painting them gray.

Final part of the fingers 🙂

Cost Estimate:

  • Alginate – 4 oz * ($1.25/oz) = $5
  • Plaster – 6 oz * ($5.78/32 oz) = $1.08
  • spray paint – 1 oz * ($0.58/oz) = $0.58
  • Labor – 2 hours * $10 = $20
  • Total: $26.66
