3D Printing an Impossible Cylinder

For this assignment I found a file on thingiverse of a gyroid cylinder, which would be a shape impossible to create through any other method due to the complex internal geometry. The link for the part is here: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:41272

In the part file, a portion of the rounded surface was already cut off to create a flat surface to print on, so this surface was set to be the base within the slicer. The part was also scaled down from 60mm x 60 mm to 30mm x 30mm in order to fit within the capsule. A layer height of 0.15 mm was used, along with 15% infill, although this did not have a significant impact on the final part, as the internal walls were too thin to require infill.

The first test piece was printed with PLA in the Bambulab printers, which printed without any issues. The next two pieces were printed next, but the print failed a few times due to low bed adhesion. This was fixed through the use of a brim that creasted a thin layer of plastic on the bottom of the part. This layer was easy to remove after the print, and the parts with their brim are shown in the picture below.

The next two pieces were printed on the Prusa FDM printers, using a TPU filament. This was chosen as TPU was meant to be flexible, so I wanted to see the difference in the two parts. The brim was used again, along with the same layer height settings, resulting in a print process with no errors. One interesting thing to note is that while one brim was easy to remove, the other was significantly more difficult, and still had a portion of the brim remaining that I was unable to remove. The picture below shows the two TPU parts, where the one on the left has a portion of the brim remaining.
