Who am I, and why am I here?
My name is Baris, pronounced as “Bar-ish”. In Turkish, “Barış” translates to “peace”. (While you delve further into my introduction, feel free to enjoy this Turkish song I’ve linked, enhancing the ambiance as you read.)
Professionally, I am an MD and hold an MSc in Biomaterials. Presently, I’m pursuing a PhD in Bioengineering. You may find yourself curious as to how I found my way to Rice’s BIOE 555. This brings me to a question posed in our assignment.
“What is one thing that you have made that you are proud of ?”
Passion is my proudest creation. I’m really into everything about the cardiovascular world, especially the cool new treatments and gadgets coming out. This love for my work has led me to wear two hats: one where I work directly with patients and another where I dive deep into research in the lab. This journey brought me to Rice. It’s not just any place – Rice has one of the best Bioengineering Departments around! Plus, they’re tight with TMC, which is the biggest medical center in the world.
What is one thing that you want to make (this semester or in the future)?
Friends. Interestingly, crafting friendships demands fewer resources than most projects this semester. Yet, the endeavor to form meaningful ones remains a complex challenge.
What is one thing that you hope to learn in ENGI 210?
I want to get better at tackling problems, especially when it comes to assignments. Even though our classes will show us a bunch of different tools for all sorts of tasks, I think there’s a basic pattern to all of them:
- Idea conceptualization / Review requirements
- Design
- Prototype
- Review and Refine
- Start from “2. Design” again until approved
It’s not just about picking up DIY skills for me. I really want to make these steps second nature so I can use them in whatever I do next!
