Welcome back to my blog! In this week’s project for my Prototyping and Fabrication class, I ventured into the world of sewing to create a custom apron tailored to my measurements. It turned out to be an incredibly enjoyable experience. This experience reminded me of my childhood, as my father owns a company specializing in bed sheets, pillows, and various room decoration items that require intricate sewing. During every summer break, I used to assist my dad’s employees, observing and delivering products to clients. However, I had never personally operated a sewing machine before, so embarking on this apron-making journey was both exciting and educational.
To kickstart my project, I diligently followed the beginner’s instructions, which provided me with the dimensions for a large apron. However, I soon realized that to achieve a perfect fit, some adjustments were needed. Using guide dots on the fabric, I modified the measurements to better suit my dimensions. The cutting process was a bit challenging, as maintaining a straight line proved to be trickier than expected. Despite the initial difficulties, I eventually shaped the fabric into the desired apron form.
The sewing phase began with the meticulous folding of the fabric edges and securing them with pins. This step was crucial to ensure an easier sewing process along the edges. My initial attempts were far from perfect; the stitching didn’t follow a perfectly straight line. However, with perseverance, my confidence grew, and my stitching skills improved significantly.
Next, it was time to sew the straps for my apron. Initially, I overlooked the need for a box stitch pattern and simply sewed in a straight line. After this minor hiccup, I realized the importance of using a box stitch pattern for the straps. To rectify my mistake, I turned to YouTube for guidance. A helpful tutorial taught me the proper technique, which involved sewing straight, forward, and straight again for the first line of the box, followed by the diagonals and sides to complete the pattern.
In the end, I was happy with the results of my apron. This experience has left me eager to incorporate my newfound sewing skills into future projects within my career.
