casting and molding my phalanges

We started this homework in class! I molded my two fingers (separately) using alginate and water. The measurements for this were more like cooking than baking, meaning they weren’t precise at all and it was mainly based on vibes. I mixed until it became the consistency of pudding, and put my fingers in to create the mold. I waited there for about 3-7 minutes so the mixture could solidify around my fingers. I removed my fingers, and mixed and poured in the plaster and placed my nail.

After the plaster was cured, I wiggled the alginate around, loosening the fingers. I then stuck my fingers into a paper cup so they can stand tall and proud (and get them prepped for post-processing).

I first started with sanding the ends with the nail to make it more smooth. I didn’t want to sand everything, in fear that the details will be gone, so instead I got a nail and carved away any imperfections due to molding.

I then spray painted them red, let that dry, and then sprayed a gloss over them. Here’s the finished product!

Cost Analysis

The alienate was pretty cheap, and for the amount I used, it would be on the higher end, $2. The plaster would also be around the same. The plaster would be around $3. for equipment popsicle sticks, containers, and screws would total around $4 (again, on the higher end). Spray paint and gloss would be $1 for the amount I used, and finally labor would be a little generous with minimum wage of $7.50, with me working 2.5 hours (not including waiting time). That would be a total of $30.75, which, again, calculating on the higher end of things.
