This is Houston, Ready to Takeoff–01.09.2018

Hi Y’all,

I’m Zhenlin Kan from Wiess College, call me Scout. So something about myself, I’m now across half the globe away from China here in Houston pursuing an education and exploring my future career. And here I am, a freshman MechE student ready to get more hands-on experience on engineering designing and fabrication. I was in the same Engi120 team last semester with Frank, and with Serena as our best TA!

My interests lie in combination of arts and technology as well. After all, designing is not only about functionality but as well as aesthetics. Particularly, I’m interested in the field of personal air-borne transportation devices, which I believe would highlight the next generation of technology. And something I’m proud of is that, as I mentioned, I’ve got a patent for a conceptual hover-board design–not the lame two-wheel electronic balancing “toy” (see Figure 1), but an actual personal air-borne transportation device that would introduce human into the era of flexible personal air-borne transportation, to better exploit this three dimensional world, to realize the long-held dream of flying freely in the air (see Figure 2). The idea currently still stays in the conceptual phase but I’ve determined to bring into reality.

And this is what I designed

(Sorry about the pre-assigned labels)

As I just learnt about the Boeing Gofly competition, I’m considering to take the opportunity and present my ideas to the engineering community. And with my disadvantages as a freshman engineer in mind, I hope to gain adequate knowledge of how to illustrate and materialize my ideas with the skills we are going to learn here in Engi210, especially designing softwares like Solidworks and Adobeillustrator.

Looking forward to spending a great semester with y’all!!!
