For this Project I created a two dimensional vector drawing of movement 100 from 507 Mechanical Movements.
To start off I downloaded a frame of the animation of this mechanism because it had cleaner lines.
I then applied Image trace to the image. It took some time to find the threshold and path accuracy setting that would yield a result that wouldn’t require much correction.
I then corrected the broken paths by replacing meandering lines with straight ones and lumpy circles with perfect ones. I also simplified the shapes to reflect what would actually need to be cut out, though I left them in their original orientation.
I then grouped the individual paths that make up each part so that it would be easy to separate and orient them for vector cutting. I also changed the stroke size to .001 as that is what the Epilogue printer uses to determine cutting paths.
altogether this took me about 2 hours to complete. For reasons discussed in my blog To Build a Box this brings the labor cost to $40. Based on rentacomputer.com average workstation rentals cost $195 which I assume is for a month. That brings the computer time to 54¢. The total cost to produce this file is therefore $40.54. Alternatively, you can get it here for free.
