Blog 1: First day!

Hello! My name is Mathias Adamu a sophomore Mechanical Engineer at Brown College. Some activities that i’m engaged in at Rice include the Black Male Leadership Initiative (BMLI), Rice African Student Association (RASA), and dabble in multiple Intramural sports. One thing that I’ve made that i’m proud was my ENGI-120/SEED project, a device that coats pre-cut and perforated nylon strips with photo emulsion to make 16mm film for development. In the second iteration of this device, me and my teammates were able to devise a system of gears to translate rotary motion to linear motion which was really cool! One thing I want to make this semester or in the future is anything with electrical components that is fully automated. Through out the two iterations of our device we had always hoped for a motor to replace the hand crank that we used, which would have been really cool. One thing that I hope to learn in ENGI-210 would be to CAD and 3-D print something on my own. I have a little bit of experience in 3-D printing but I believe my CAD skills need some work and I believe a semester of ENGI-210 will help!
