H04: Laser Cutting

Total Estimate:

Materials:

One pank of the wood at the OEDk cost

Labor: $19.35

The part took around 12 minutes to cut and the editing plus cutting took me about 1 hours. According to PayScale, the average hourly pay of a machinist is $19.35/hr so the labor cost is 19.35*1= $19.35

Process:

Software:

I used the make a box software found on https://makeabox.io/ to create the dxf. for my box. I created a 6″ x6″x6″  box with wall thickness of 1/8″. The remaining setting were:

  • Kerf- 0.01
  • Margin- 0.125
  • Padding-0.1
  • Stroke-0.001

Edits and Design Choices:

Afterwards I downloaded my file to edit on Adobe. I made 3 main edits. First I removed the top face to create an open face box but I decided to keep the ridges on the other faces for aesthetics. I thought it looked like a castle wall. Second I looked for a picture that I felt was most representative of me online and found a dopey but smiling sun. I used a image to vector file converter with 2 colors and placed the vector file onto the middle of my front face. Lastly, I added my name, the date, and the class below the sun.

Ridges left on the top of my box that I think makes my box faces look like castle walls.

Assembly:

Assembly was a bit difficult because the pieces barely fit together. I had to use a pair of scissors as a hammer ( I could not use an actual hammer for fear of breaking the box with excessive force) to force the pieces together. Once they were together they fit tightly but over time some of the pieces drifted apart a bit but once I re-hammered them together they stayed in place.

Results:

Finished Box

Failures:

For my first try I set the wall thickness to 1/4″ which was too high and resulted in long teeth that did not fit together well at all. I fixed this fro the second box and was able to make the teeth fit together tightly.

Failed Box with incorrect teeth length
